A View of Chemical Peels for the New Year

January 8, 2012

Unlike the scene from the Sex and City episode when Samantha goes to her physician for a chemical peel and leaves with her face looking as red as a tomato is a misconception with superficial to medium depth skin peeling. While that can certainly happen with a deep chemical peel, there are numerous peel formulations capable of yielding results without any downtime.

The New Year brings a perfect time to start a renewal program which incorporates chemical peels. Some of the myths of chemicals peels are that they are too aggressive for use on Rosacea patients, or my skin will be peeling for weeks, or my favorite you cannot have peels during the summer months.

Peels can be administered year round depending upon your schedule and lifestyle. Certainly you would not go to the beach or sunbathe after a peel, nor go skiing where cold temperatures can cause a wind burn.

The benefits of regular chemical peels can help minimize fine lines, reduce brown spots caused by sun damage and melasma, clear active acne and reduce scarring, even out rough texture, as well as, speed up collagen production and increase cellular turnover.

What exactly is a Chemical Peel? According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, “A Chemical Peel also called chemexfoliation or derma peeling is a one of the least invasive ways to improve the appearance of your skin”. Chemical peels have been around for decades and have evolved into patient friendly combination solutions for every type of skin. A professional evaluation to determine which peel will work best for you skin type and goals, along with prepping with skin care products 2 to 4 weeks prior to the peel will yield renewed and healthy skin to start the New Year.
